The charging system in a forklift is similar to a lot of other vehicles you see on the road. It includes a battery, the voltage regulator, and an alternator. Like all other vehicles, a forklift alternator dorms an important part of their charging systems.
An alternator generates power for other electrical components of a forklift, including the instrument panel. It creates AC power by using electromagnetism that is made through the interaction of the rotor and stator. Electricity will then form and provide the needed voltage and help with running the vehicle.
You can also choose to use a refurbished alternator. A refurbished alternator is where it was disassembled and all member components are checked, inspected, and cleaned. As soon as thorough testing of the alternator has been done, it is re-assembled and tested again to see if it complies with the quality standard.

Classification of Forklift Alternators
Alternators are classified by the method of excitation, number of phrases, type of rotation, and among many others. Here are a few classifications of alternators you should know.
Excitation
There are 2 main ways to produce the magnetic field used in the laternators: using permanent magnets that create their own persistent magnetic field OR by using field coils.
Alternators that use permanent magnets are specially called magnetos. Other alternators where wound field coils from an electromagnet produce the rotating magnetic field. A permanent magnet generator (PMG) may produce either alternating current or direct current if it has a commutator.
Direct Connect Direct Current (DC) Generator
This DC method of excitation includes a smaller DC generator fixed on the same shaft with the alternator. The DC generator then generates a small amount of electricity enough to excite the field coils of the connected alternator to generate electricity.
Number of Phases
You can also classify alternators by the number of phases of their output voltage. The output can be single phase or polypase. 3-phase alternators are the most common alternators. However, polyphase alternators can be 2-phased, 6-phased, or more.
Cooling Methods
A lot of alternators are cooled by ambient air that are forced through the enclosure by an attached fan. The attached fan is on the same shaft that drives the alternator. In heavier vehicles, a heavy demand on the electrical system may need a larger alternator to be oil-cooled. However, there are alternators that also uses water-cooling systems too.
