A water pump is a forklift engine’s heart of cooling systems. It is a centrifugal pump that is operated and run by a belt connected to the crankshaft of a forklift’s engine. Its primary function is to push coolant through the machine’s engine block, radiator and hose. It’s to keep the forklift engine system cool. As soon as your forklift engine is heated, the coolant is transferred back to the radiator to cool off. After that it is sent through the system again for a repeat cycle.
Without the water pump, the coolant will just sit in the system idly. The forklift engine is quite likely to overheat. When it overheats, it can cause serious engine damage to your forklift. Water pumps in your forklifts have a lifespan just like every machine. You should replace it at the interval the water pump’s manual suggests.

Water pumps with a belt pulley
Water pumps with pulleys are made to be driven by a drive belt or serpentine belt. Without a pulley, a water pump will not rotate unless it’s driven by the timing belt. It also needs a timing chain or an electric motor.
There are 2 kinds of pulleys used on an engine pump: V-groove pulley and multi-groove pulley.
V-groove pulley is a single depth pulley that can drive 1 belt only. Some of it can have more than 1 grove. Each groove must have its own belt. If 1 belt breaks, then only the circuit with the belt is no longer operational.
Multi-groove pulley is a multi-depth pulley that can drive a serpentine belt. It’s a useful belt because it can be driven on both its front and back sides. The serpentine belt serves well but when it breaks, then all the accessories fail. This includes the water pump too.
