Every vehicle needs regular checkups and repairs periodically. It’s only normal that forklifts require such attention as it has its own lifespans too. Huge loads are often placed on forklifts to help with the daily operations. As it’s a regular thing, it means that it will put a lot of strain on the forklift and its drivetrain components.
Here are some things to look out for in a forklift’s drivetrain components for maintenance purposes.
1. A healthy tire
Forklift tires are a lot similar to industrial vehicle tires. It has a wear line that is located above the tire size. If the tire meets that particular line, you would have worn your tire by 50%. You will certainly need to replace it.
At the same time, you should also check for chunking and tearing of the tires too. Chunking on a tire means that bits and pieces of the tires will start to fall off. When the pieces start to fall off, they can become problematic.
Tearing is when the forklift has been running on uneven ground for too long. The uneven ground will contribute to the tearing of the forklift tires. Avoid driving tires over uneven ground or debris. If you see any tearing of tires, replace it as soon as possible.
2. Clutch and gearshift
The Clutch and gearshift are some of the most important parts of a forklift’s drivetrain component maintenance. For very obvious reasons, a solid and functioning clutch and gearshift can send your forklift into disarray and danger. It does not just endanger the vehicle itself, it will also hurt the operator and the employees around it.
Regular checks on the clutch and gearshift is mandatory as you do not wish for a workplace accident to happen. Avoid costly accidents where possible.
3. Functioning steering wheel
Check that the steering wheel functions properly. Make sure that the steering wheel is able to steer smoothly without any issues. When operating a forklift vehicle, make sure that the tires turn in the right direction as where the steering wheel is steered too.
If there are any issues with the steering wheel and its mechanism, have it checked and replaced immediately. Do not leave it until the very last minute before you replace the steering wheel with one that actually works.
4. Brakes
For very obvious reasons, your brakes have to be in functioning order. Make sure that it brakes when and where necessary. Without a proper and functioning brake, it can jeopardize the vehicle and everyone surrounding it. From time and time again, always have regular checkups on the breaks. Avoid making any mistakes that can be financially costly.
Check on the foot brakes, parking breaks, and deadman seat brakes. They will see if the brake pedal holds until the vehicle stops smoothly. At the same time, check if the brake can hold against straight acceleration and if it can hold when the operator gets up from his seat.
Bottom Line
For the most part, it is always important to check on the forklift’s drivetrain components. Regular checkups and maintenance is great for the vehicle’s overall health.
